The Mongolian Death Worm

A giant worm that spits acid and farts lighting, sounds like something from a really bad Sci-Fi movie. However, this is actually (apparently is probably the correct) a creature that lives in the Gobi Desert (covering Northern China and Southern Mongolia). My initial thoughts were, Wow, what’s next? The Loch-ness monster can shoot laser beams from its eyes or the bogeyman has an adamantium skeleton. Yes, there is a reference to a particular comic franchise here but that is not what I was getting at.

Therefore back to the topic. The Allghoi Khorkhoi or 'the intestine worm' as the Mongoloians called it. However in English speaking countries it is called the Mongolian Death Worm. However based on these local accounts it sounds a bit like a combination of the worms from Dune and those ‘things’ in Tremors. Perhaps the Mongolians have been smoking too much Desert Grass and watching too many Sci-Fi / Horrow movies...

The appearance of this worm is definitely is not pretty, however I don’t think there are many worms that are pretty. Their size can vary in size from half a metres to one and a half metres, it is dark or blood red in colour and well… wormy looking. Even thou it probably could not be a worm as worms are really bad at retaining water. An important ability to posses should you live in a desert.

Regardless if it exists or not, it appears that the Mongolian Death Worm story is big news around the world. There are several YouTube clips for it, including the ones below of parties being sent to look for this worm

:

There are even computer games featuring this worm. Take a look at Death Worm, its pretty fun! You can see some game footage in the YouTube clip below:.

You can even buy T-Shirts or listen to a Mongolian Death Worm heavy metal music, buy bumper stickers, buy trucker caps or even view street art dedicated in its honour. That is a lot of commerical usages for something that ugly.

Anyways… As you can see, this worm is big news. Big for something that has never been scientifically proven or seen by anyone else except locals. Therefore why are we so excited about an idea of a giant worm when we have many other giant things that can kill us. What makes a killer worm more special than a cobra or an elephant?

Ok, I must admit it is pretty cool if I could spit acid at your face and then electrocute you in quick succession. However Personally I think as long as people are willing to believe there are more things out there that have not been discovered or studied, we will always get some form of urban legends or cryptozoology (a term I recently discovered). I am not sure if I am like everyone else but sometimes I feel there are more mysterious in life anymore. Everything has been discovered and studied and we humans have a pretty good idea of what and how things work. Therefore maybe the Mongolian Death Worm is just a legend that people do not really want to discover.

But, I hope we actually find a Mongolian Death Worm, imagine having one of those for a guard dog!
