GReader is a freeware application that can notify you of new emails in your inbox by using an animated desktop character.
These characters will appear when you receive new emails in your inbox and even dictate the subject of the email. The character can be modified to suit your needs, such as time delay to appear, character appearance. This installation consists of two default characters, Merlin - the wizard and SJr-23 - Robot Ninja. | ![]() |
It sits on your system tray and constantly checks your GMail account. If new emails are received a customisable 'Agent' or character will speak to you and inform you of the emails. The announcement will include: Who sent you the email and the Subject line.This program requires the .NET Framework 1.1 or higher to work. Please refer to the notes below.

All actions can be performed through the parrot icon in the system tray. Right click on the icon to see the menu. GReader is able to connect via a proxy. This is configured via the menu mentioned before.

Instructions for character installation:
Download the desired characters. Most of these characters should include an installation.
If they do not, you can manually add the .ACS file into the following folders
- C:\WINDOWS\MSAGENT\CHARS (Windows XP)
- C:\WINNT\MSAGENT\CHARS (Windows NT)
If you are using Windows 2000, ME and XP, you might be required to install SAPI 4.0. This is the engine used to create the agent speech functions.

You can download SAPI 4.0.
You can check if you have SAPI 4.0 installed on your computer by checking Control Panel - Speech. The default voice should be Microsoft Sam.
You can download additional voices, including other languages from Microsoft's website, localised languages.
You can download an additional English Voice here too, it is much better than Microsoft Sam.
Please note: Windows Vista have SAPI preinstalled but with Windows 7 it is not. For Windows 7 users you will need to follow the same instructions as above.
